Say it with me …Virus removal now!

                                Virus removal tomorrow!

                                Virus removal forever!

We all want the same thing, to check our emails and surf the Internet without getting viruses. Sadly, not a day goes by that I am not confronted with some virus threat such as spyware, keyloggers, worms, or Trojans that causes all sorts of problems and damages our systems. They steal our identities and banking information. They make our computers slowdown, freeze-up, or stop altogether. They make it virtually impossible to enjoy the basic experience or run our businesses. These evil-doers play by no rules! They attack suspect computers’ vulnerabilities and cause us all to suffer their intrusive day after day terror.

There is nothing worse than not being able to use your computer because viruses have taken over it! According to Cnet.com, “7 out of 10 computers are dangerously infected today.”  Where does yours fall?  Most people are first angry and then worry about the evil that deadly viruses does. For good reasons!         If you feel like I do, you want to catch these virus “terrorist” and punish them, and then punish them some more!

Unfortunately it’s getting worse

These virus “terrorist” are winning. Yes they are. This is a sad fact because it is estimated that roughly 80,000 forms of viruses exist today and now float throughout the Internet just searching to attack computers-at-risk which are computers with inadequate or no antivirus protection at all. Whether you are just checking your email or surfing the web for a cheap airline ticket, with every click, the chances of running head-first into a nasty virus increases more and more. I tell you, it never fails, the minute your antivirus protection expires, a virus will seek and attack you. Even new PC’s are currently being infected after only 3 to 6 months after placed in service. Considering that new PC’s come with only 90-day trial versions antiviruses, most owners neglect to renew their subscription; thereby subjecting themselves to this stressful situations of frustration, anger and fear. In the worst cases, all pictures and documents, as well as programs (such as QuickBooks) are permanently destroyed, and the repairs are more costly than buying a new machine with no data. Unfortunately, it is our personal memories and business records that we cannot replace and this data is what differentiates our machine from every machine that’sconnected the Internet.
                        How to fight          Back...
                                                                     How

Please note: An antivirus program to be effective must perform 2 primary purposes. First, it must be able to protect you and secondly, it should be able to tell you when it is not protecting you. If you are not getting this basic level of protection, hang-on, because a rough ride with a bad guy is just around the bin!                 So what really is a virus? And what’s the first thing you should do when you suspect you have been attacked?  I will answer these questions in the next section … continue on page 2special offer page 3.

First things first

So what’s all the fuss about? And what really is a virus? Computer viruses are very similar to our own bodies’ viruses. The nature of any virus is to survive by attaching itself to a host, control the host, and replicate itself over and over again. It “jumps” from host to host infecting all that it comes in contact with.  It is a bad program coded to attack and reprogram good programs and then do malicious things against us.  A few months ago I was called out on a job at a local mom-and-pop store. The owner explained that he could not get his computer to boot-up. I was able to get it booted-up in safe mode, but there was nothing left on his hard drive except virus infected sub-files. All his icons were gone, all his documents, pictures and programs vanished; and more importantly, his surveillance program that his store’s video camera used was completely destroyed. This was a $3,000 piece of software that he had to replace. Upon asking him how long he has suspected he had this virus, he said about 2-weeks. He also told me that his antivirus protection had expired a week before this all happen and he had purchased a new one but had not found time to installed it. To make this very expensive story short, he lost everything.  So I had to reformat his hard drive 2-times and start from scratch rebuilding his system. He ended up justbuying a new computer.

There were a number of mistakes this owner made, as most owners do. The first thing you should do when you suspect you have a virus is power the computer off by depressing the power on/off button until it is completely off. This is necessary because it stops and minimizes the spread and control the virus initially gains. Under no conditions do you restart the computer, especially if it is networked to others, because this will allow the virus to spread deeper into the primary computer’s file system and more importantly, it will infect the registry (the brain of the computer); and then it could “jump” or repeat this process on other connected systems.  As with our own bodies, control the brain and you control the body.

Does it hurt enough?

I remember a story about a farmer and his dog. Everyday a young boy would walk past this farmer’s house on his way to school. The farmer and his old hound dog would be sitting on the porch. Every 5-minutes the old hound would howl loudly. After many times passing the farmer’s house, the young boy finally stopped and asked the farmer why his dog howled over and over again when he looked just fine.  The farmer turned to the boy and said, he’s lying on a nail. The boy said a nail, why doesn’t  he move? To which the farmer replied, it doesn’t hurt enough! When you get a virus, your computer is “hurt”.  If you wait until it “hurts enough” the slow boot-ups, the constant pop-ups, the freeze-ups and blue-screens-of-death (BSOD) will plaque you relentlessly until they kill your computer or the virus is killed.     I’m sure you realize now, you really need to know the moment your computer gets “hurt”.This is why adequate antivirus protection must be able to protect you and inform you when it cannot protect you.

What you don’t knowcan hurt you is never truer than with computers. Viruses get on computers by only 3 ways: either by consent, conquest, or secretly. And the first thing these aggressive viruses try to do, is avoid detection, and then deliver their maximum payload (many variants packed in 1) by shutting-down or disabling weak antivirus protections and firewalls. When protections and firewalls are disabled, your computer is totally compromised and wide-open for the 80,000 viruses floating throughout the Internet. To summarize:  the longer a virus is allowed to remain active, undetected or unchecked, the greater damage it will do; the harder it will be to remove; the less likely it will be to recover any data, and the repairs and the emotional distress will be painfully more costly .
