The Courtney Bell Mentorship Program

Picture
·        The Courtney Bell Mentorship Program is designed to show low-income and homeless children the consequences of not getting an education, not learning from their mistakes, and in retrospect, the benefits and reward of staying focused and working hard.

·        People First is committed to assisting the children in The Courtney Bell Mentorship Program throughout their K through 12 educations, helping the children who want to go onto college get into college successfully.

·        People First and The Courtney Bell Mentorship Program are extending beyond the summer to assist children with food, clothing, shelter, and academic and emotional support.

·        Children in The Courtney Bell Mentorship Program are on average are: ages 12-16, have been or are homeless, are raised in an environment of drugs, alcohol, prostitution, panhandling, abandonment, and mediocrity.

·        All children in The Courtney Bell Mentorship Program are children that want to be in the program; they want to learn and become educated on how they can live a better life.

Stage one of mentorship program:

Children in the program will participate in community service by collecting recyclables, and cleaning up parks and worn parts of the community.  This will be a lesson to show the reality of if they themselves were homeless and had to do this for their survival.  I want children to know that this is our community and it is our job as citizens to do what we can for it and the people living in it.  We will fail as a community if we only worry about self needs such as, what can I get out of this, or what will happen to me.  We will rise as a community if we take pride in our community and do what we can for other people.

Stage two of mentorship program:
Children in the program will go out and feed homeless and unfortunate members in the community.   From this experience I hope the children will see that there are two different types of homeless people, one of which are the people who are homeless because of a lack of opportunity.  With this in mind I hope the children in my program will realize they all have a lot to be thankful for.  This will in turn motivate children to take advantage of the opportunities they have.  For those children that are going down the wrong path it will show them that if they do not straighten up now, they too could become homeless and living out on the streets.

Stage two aims to show the children that there are different types of homeless people:
The first type of homeless people:
Homeless people that are crazy, have lost hope, and/or are accustomed to being homeless.  Children will see what happens when people give up. No one will come to the rescue because people have to want and work to do better for themselves.

The second type of homeless people:
Homeless people that are working hard to change their situations but are still homeless. Children will see these are everyday people that happen to be homeless and all they need is an opportunity. The realization children will see is that not everyone gets an opportunity to improve their life conditions.

Stage three of the mentorship program:

Children will see real life examples of successful and significant people from our community*.  These people will tell their personal stories in their own homes over a dinner catered by them.  Each story will show the children how these successful, significant people got to the point they are at now.

Stage three aims to show children what education, working hard, and choosing to do the right thing can get people.  This will be taught by introducing the idea of living a life that is both successful and significant.

Success is what people accomplish for themselves.  Achieving the “American Dream” of owning your own home and car, is a result of being successful.

Significance is what people accomplish for others with no strings attached. A person that achieves this American dream and still helps others raise their standard of living is an example of significance.

*If you believe you have a story that will influence children to work hard and get their education, please contact Mr. Courtney Bell

Children in my program will see for themselves that they have a choice for how their life can turn out.  For many of these children, this may be the first time they realize they have this choice.   The end result of the Courtney Bell Mentorship Program is that children understand…

“You only get out of life what you put into it; there is nothing more and nothing less gained.”

The Courtney Bell Mentorship program expands beyond summer by proving tutoring and mentoring. The tutoring, like all tutoring and mentoring, is free of charge for low income and unprivileged children.

The People First Method for Children:

Our method is to get children going down a prosperous path.

We make sure children are not going without food.

We make sure children have clean clothes every day.

We make sure children have the necessary school supplies to learn and become educated.

We replace the hunger for food with the hunger for knowledge and education.
